I Have Seen this Pizza Before
I subscribe to hundreds of blogs, face book pages, twitter accounts and the like. But I am going to single out one today. Without naming the business directly I will tell you that it is a fairly new pizza by the slice concept in my town. In fact it is less that ¼ mile away from my house.
They have set this up as a franchise model in the hopes the concept can be duplicated in the future. It has good pizza, a good price point, and the service for all practical purposes is fairly quick and accurate. Here’s what’s wrong with all this mundane posting of the pizza picture(s).
They are using face book to communicate with their customers via the usual “like” button. As of today they have just a little over 500 likes. They always post basically the same thing. Refer to the daily screen shot. It’s generally a picture of the pizza flavor of the day and a sentence like “You know you want sum”. They could do so much more with little effort. So here is my recommend for family restaurants around the world.
- Have a camera available so you can take a picture of your customer eating your food.
- Post that picture on every social network.
- Make a Walgreens photo print and start a “Our Customers are the Greatest” photo bulletin board in the store.
- Tell customers if they like the picture on the board to go ahead and take it.
- Have your customers take pictures of themselves with goofy faces eating your food.
- Have your customers take pictures of eating your food in unusual places.
- Have them post them immediately on you face book or other social media site then give them a coupon for a free beverage on their next visit.
- Buy a copy of Unmarketing by Scott Stratten and learn how to use the social media that can make your business grow.
This friends, is just the tip of the iceberg as to what is possible today with social media.
One more thing. They need pizza magnets that go on refrigerators so when people go the fridge when they are hungry they will see the magnet and think pizza! If you need these for your restaurant call me 208-608-5016.

“Like Us on Facebook” – WHY?
My town is under 100k in the city limits. So you can imagine all the readers around us announce, “Like Us on Facebook” and my standard question to myself is WHY? When I finally remember to do so I find absolutely nothing of value, and I do mean nothing.
Now before I go any further yes I do have a business Facebook page. I don’t promote it because I want to give a value to my customers and I have not come up with a good enough idea to get them to really interact with me. I do post relevant information about my products and services but I want more from that particular part of social media.
Here are some of the lamest things I have seen so far.
1. “COME EAT LUNCH WITH US TODAY”. My question, WHY? This one is repeated daily with the all caps rotator of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Every once in a while it mentions something about chicken on Sundays.
2. A “Like us every week for a chance to win BLAH” There is no benefit to a customer to like this because it is the same every week.
3. Here is today’s version of the new pizza joint. “You toss the pizza dough to create a crust that is more crisp and more tender, and expands more effectively in the oven.” I know they think they are selling the sizzle here but just a suggestion. Have you had a customer that just told you “it’s the best piece of pizza they have ever eaten” take a picture of themselves or you take one and post it on your FB page with that comment.
I am sure you are getting the drift of this message. Always asking the big question of WHY makes me stop and think before I ask my customers or prospects to participate.
Scott
PS: Now “Like Me” on Facebook so my feeling won’t get hurt.
